Our History

The Billy D. Brooks Memorial Choir

The Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Minnie Brooks was formed as a part of the Black Ministry Convocation that took place in Detroit in 1993. It is made up of members of various Churches in the Detroit Metropolitan Area.

The Billy Brooks Choir has performed throughout the State of Michigan as well as nation-wide. Named in honor of the Director’s late husband, their purpose is to Glorify God through song in the power of the Holy Spirit and to the building up of Christ’s Body here on earth.


Minnie A. Brooks

Along with the Billy Brooks Memorial Lutheran Choir, Mrs. Brooks is also the director of the Outer Drive Faith Lutheran Church English Hand Bell Choir and other Choirs in the Detroit Area. A native of Dallas Texas, Mrs. Brooks is a graduate of Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Mo. and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy.

She received her Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Kansas. She also received additional certification from Wayne State University in Detroit.

Mrs. Brooks is a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, a retired teacher of Vocal Music from the Detroit Board of Education after 30 years of service, mother of three adult sons and a very proud grandmother.
